State College Budget

State College Area School District residents could see a 2.9% tax increase for the 2013-14 fiscal year. The District’s Board of Directors approved a preliminary budget for the upcoming year last night. District officials say a lower tax increase is possible, much like the scenario from 2012-13. The development of Governor Tom Corbett’s will likely lead for an updated proposal for the Board to consider this spring.

Hit and Run Investigation

State College police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that knocked down a utility pole early Sunday morning at the intersection of Fraternity Row and East Foster Avenue in the Borough. Police say a car slammed into the pole, snapping the pole in half, which toppled to the ground along with a street light. Police say the car also likely suffered severe front-end damage. Anyone with information is being asked to call 814-234-7150.

Increased Patrols planned for Weekend

The Centre County Alcohol Task Force will assist the State College Borough Police Department during the upcoming State Patty’s Day weekend. Additional officers will be on patrol, beginning on Friday. The task force will pursue appropriate maximum fines and jail time for any offenses. As of now, State College bars plan to open for the student-created holiday on Saturday. However, student and community leaders are attempting to work with downtown establishments to create a plan to limit dangerous drinking.
