ROADWORK IN STATE COLLEGE

South Allen Street between South Atherton Street and Hutchinson Way will be reduced to a single lane today from 7:30 am until 5 pm. Public works crews are repairing a sanitary sewer line through the area. Anyone with questions should contact the department at 234-7135.


STOLEN CHECKS USED AT WALMART

State College police are searching for a man suspected of using stolen checks to purchase electronics from the Benner Pike Walmart. Police say an individual reported a stolen backpack containing a checkbook and other items from a desk at Schlow Library in late November. The next day, one of the victim’s checks was used to buy a laptop computer. Additional attempted purchases were rejected. The suspect is described as a middle-aged, white male wearing a blue winter jacket and camouflage hat. Anyone with information should contact police at 814-234-7150.


PLASTIC BAG COLLECTION

16 State College Area Elementary schools are competing to collect the most plastic bags for a good cause. Three-quarters of the way through the challenge, more than 150-thousand bags, totaling over 2,000 pounds of plastic were amassed. The plastic bags will be sent to the Trex Company and recycled into plastic lumber. Along with Weis Markets and Lowe’s, Trex is providing each school with a recycled plastic lumber park bench and bird house. The winning school will be announced on April 21st.

AID FOR FIRE MIFFLIN CO VICTIMS

Mifflin County residents displaced by a six-alarm fire Thursday met with officials yesterday to help gather information and provide aid. According to Pennlive, as many as 30 people were left without a home after the fire destroyed an entire block of the Juniata Terrace community. Officials wanted to collect insurance information and see whether residents would be eligible for small business administration loans or assistance. Five firefighters were injured battling the blaze.
