In Preparations for the heavy traffic over the July 4 holiday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike maintenance and construction crews will make all lanes in each direction available for traffic beginning a 3pm today and the lanes will stay open until the morning of July 8 barring any emergencies.In the event of emergency lane closures, the turnpike will activate its Variable Message signs and Highway advisory Radio to alert motorists.
More than 2 and a half million vehicles are expected to travel the turnpike over the holiday. Motorists hitting the highway for holiday activities and summer vacations are asked to stay alert and be aware of aggressive drivers.
Blue White weekend 2014 is officially set. The three day weekend is set for April 11-13 with the annual spring game on Saturday April 12. Several events including a carnival, fireworks and live performances will be held during the weekend. Kick off time for the game was not immediately set.
Supreme Court Nomination
The Senate Judiciary Committee is in favor Governor Corbett’s nomination of Correale Stevens to temporarily fill a vacancy on the State Supreme Court. A 2/3rds majority vote from the full Senate is required to approve Stevens to the bench.The vacancy was created when Joan Orie Melvin resigned on May 1. Melvin was convicted of using public employees to help her political campaigns.If Stevens is approved, he would serve until January 2016.
Just days before the Pennsylvania Legislatures summer recess, the state House Transportation Committee has approved a funding bill for roads, bridges and mass transit.The revised bill is not expected to include high driver’s license and registration fees or a surcharge on traffic tickets. The bill would raise 2 billion dollars a year by year 5, primarily by uncapping the oil company franchise tax in three steps.
