A local legislator wants a state investigation into last week’s sexual assault of a female staff member by an inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview.
According to the Centre Daily Times, State Representative Kerry Benninghoff said in a letter to Governor Corbett that an investigation is necessary to “protect prison workers in the future.”
State police at Rockview are conducting a formal criminal investigation into the attack. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Susan McNaughton said yesterday that the DOC is conducting its own investigation of the incident. Benninghoff said it was the fifth assault on staff in the past few months at the prison. He is calling for a review of staffing procedures at the prison.

After more than 2 weeks of testimony, closing arguments in the Pennsylvania Voter ID case took place yesterday. Attorneys arguing against the law believe that the law, if fully enforced, would disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters. Many of them low income or elderly voters.
Those in favor of the law believe they have done enough to accommodate all voters, including offering a free ID from the Department of State for any registered voter without a driver’s license or other form of acceptable ID.If the law goes into effect, all voters in the Commonwealth will be required to show a valid photo ID in order to vote in November’s election.
